چکیده

Abstract In this paper, I discuss a view proposed by Carl Hempel in his paper Reduction: Ontological and Linguistic Facets, published 1969. Here, suggested that questions regarding the identification of mental states with physiological states, relation between sociological phenomena individual behavioral biological physicochemical should be given what he calls ‘linguistic’ interpretation. His main point is whether or not an object physical depends on how it is, can be, described. wish to, firstly, explicate Hempel's suggestion, and, secondly, explore one argument favor account. will suggest there at least use term ‘physical’ philosophical discourse (and, for matter, related terms such as ‘biological’, ‘mental’, ‘natural’ etc.) cashed out linguistic representational terms.

A Representationalist Approach to Generality

by John Dilworth Philo 6 no. 1 (2003), pp. 216-234. Abstract: There are no unicorns, but there are representations of them, hence motivating an explanation of discourse about the property 'unicorn' in terms of discourse about representations of unicorns. I show how to extend this strategy to apply to any kind or property terms. References to property instances may be explained as references to ...

A Representationalist Theory of Intention

ions are relations between propositions, in which one is more abstract or general than another, let a be making a spaghetti-marinara dinner, and b be making a spaghetti dinner. In every possible world it is the case that a D b, so an intention to do a necessarily implies an intention to do b, if they are treated as normal modal operators. Normal modal operators are never abstraction free, but a...

Timbre is that property of a sound that distinguishes it other than pitch and loudness, for instance the distinctive sound quality of a violin or flute. While the term is obscure, the concept has played an important, implicit role in recent philosophy of sound. Philosophers have debated whether to identify sounds with properties of waves, events, or objects. Many of the intuitive considerations...

Physicalism, Behaviorism and Incompleteness

The content of this paper contains four parts. (1) First, physicalism gives the enlightenments to behaviorism: mind-body identity, objectivity like physics and completeness of reduction. (2) Secondly, there are difficulties which behaviorist could not overcome—both the reduction of the theory and the terms are unreliable, and the strict distinction between introspective method and inter-subject...

Loar’s Defence of Physicalism

Brian Loar believes he has refuted all those antiphysicalist arguments that take as their point of departure observations about what is or isn’t conceivable. I argue that there remains an important, popular and plausible-looking form of conceivability argument that Loar has entirely overlooked. Though he may not have realized it, Saul Kripke presents, or comes close to presenting, two fundament...
